The Benin 1000 Francs silver coin issued in 2007 is a numismatic tribute to the history of railways and the legendary Kaiser Ferdinand locomotive. On the obverse, the design presents the famous 19th-century steam engine with its tall chimney, driving wheels, tender, and smoke billowing into the sky, set against a mountain landscape with detailed vegetation below. Around the edge appear the inscriptions “KAISER FERDINAND – CHEMIN DE FER NORD” and the dual dates “1837–2007,” commemorating the 170th anniversary of the railway’s opening. The reverse proudly displays the coat of arms of the Republic of Benin: a quartered shield bearing a Somba castle, the Star of Benin, a palm tree, and a sailing ship. The shield is supported by two heraldic leopards, symbolizing strength and vigilance, while a ribbon below carries the national motto “FRATERNITE – JUSTICE – TRAVAIL.” The face value “1000 FRANCS CFA” completes the composition. Struck in silver with prooflike quality, this coin stands out as a rare collectible for enthusiasts of locomotives, rail history, and African heraldry.
