The Albania 5 Leke CuNi coin of 1987 is a fascinating numismatic piece highlighting the Port of Durrës (Durazzo), Albania’s most important seaport and one of the oldest harbors in the Adriatic. The obverse features an impressive design: a medieval stone tower of Durrës, symbol of the city’s fortifications, rises at the left, while to the right sails a majestic clipper ship with billowing sails, representing maritime trade and Albania’s connection to the sea. The denomination 5 Lekë appears below, with Albania inscribed above. On the reverse, the coin carries the state emblem of the Socialist People’s Republic of Albania: the double-headed eagle encircled by wheat ears, topped with a star, and a ribbon inscribed 24 Maj 1944. The year 1987 and the legend Republika Popullore Socialiste e Shqipërisë complete the design. Struck in copper-nickel, this issue combines historical architecture and naval themes, making it a desirable coin for collectors of Albanian history and maritime motifs.
